1. Develop a “Growth Mindset”

Your mindset is everything.

The term “growth mindset” references those who believe their talents and skills can be constantly honed for the better through feedback, quality work, and varying strategies to keep you engaged mentally and physically.

This is different from having a “fixed mindset” – those who believe they’re born with talents or gifts and don’t need to do anything else to better themselves or their talents.

Developing a growth mindset takes time, constant dedication, as well as a desire to want to be better – setting being the best version of yourself as the goal.

Before applying for any job, before creating any online profiles in job search engines, start with the following questions:

  • Why am I doing this?
  • Why do I want to work?
  • What’s the seat of my motivation?

In order to answer these questions effectively, you have to reach deep inside of yourself and answer the questions honestly.

Write your answers down if that makes things any easier.

The goal is to steel yourself (your mind) for once you put yourself out there on the job market that’s full of people younger than you.

You’ll face rejection, undoubtedly. However, if you develop your growth mindset beforehand, you’ll view that rejection as redirection to a better opportunity.

Once you’ve determine your “why” and strengthened your mindset (which is something you never stop working on), you’re ready to move to the next step in finding a job after age 65.

2. Discover What You Love

If you love what you do, you’ll never work again a day in your life.

Maybe you’ve worked 20+ years in an industry that you may not have really enjoyed, but it provided for you and your family.

Well now that that’s over, why not take this time to develop a passion or a skill you’ve put off in the past?

The beauty of retirement is that you now have the time to further develop your interests and do things that you love doing – without the restrictions that may have held you back previously.

Now’s the time to give it a try.

Create a business plan.

Think of what you love to do and ways to capitalize on that monetarily.

Develop a process on who your target audience is and how you could reach them.

Think of possibly consulting in an industry you’ve worked in for years. This would give you an advantage in the job pool since you have years of experience and technical “know-how” that would be an asset for any company.

You have to move past the fact that you’re over the age of 65; you have valuable skills that would benefit anyone that hires you.
